Payne: The media’s Tampa agenda

Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin’s wild detour into “legitimate rape” displayed not only a buffoon – but an undisciplined candidate with a tendency to wander down blind alleys like repealing the 17th Amendment (it’s the economy, stupid).

But the Akin controversy also exposes another problem: Why is the media obsessing over the abortion issue?

After all, repeated polls find that abortion does not crack the Top Ten in issues that matter to voters in this election year fraught with economic and debt crises. Yet liberal media – parroting the Obama War on Women line – has elevated the issue at the expense of news paramount to voter’s economic concerns (this writer is pro-choice).

The AP, for example, led it’s GOP convention coverage with the abortion issue despite the story being a week old and despite virtually every Republican having denounced Akin and disinvited him from Tampa. The wire service’s partisan brethren, reports the Media Research Center, found the MSM gave FOUR times the coverage to Akin’s gaffe compared to Joe Biden’s racially-insensitive “chains” gaffe

Meanwhile, Michigan (and national) readers were deprived of these important stories:

– According to Census stats, Middle class income has dropped by a staggering $4019 – and $2,544 since the recession ended three years ago, a 5 percent drop. These numbers are powerful evidence that President Obama’s claim that his policies have helped the middle class. Unfair, you say, because Mr. Obama inherited a recession? Well, even if you start the analysis when the recession ended in June 2009, the numbers are dismal.

– Due to the Obama administration’s War on Coal, coal businesses are closing and laying off workers in Ohio and West Virginia.

– Romneycare, Massachusetts’ Obamacare model, continues to foreshadow every ill predicted for its federal cousin. It now consumes 54 percent of the state’s budget (nearly double a decade ago) and the legislature this month passed price controls – a precursor to rationing.

That the MSM is ignoring these essential stories is media malpractice – especially in an election year in which voters deserve all the facts.
