Payne: Granholm says God shut down GOP convention

Posted by hpayne on August 28, 2012

“R convention delay due to Isaac: I guess God has ways to shut that whole thing down,” tweeted Jennifer Granholm this week.

But in contrast to Mitt Romney’s lame birth certificate joke in Metro Detroit last week, Granholm’s Pat Robertson-channeling joke was met with crickets from the national – and Michigan – media.

One can only imagine the outrage if those words had come from GOP lips. After all, Granholm is not just a prominent ex-governor and Democratic media celebrity – she is speaking at next week’s Democratic Convention in Charlotte. Imagine if Todd Akin had divined God’s wrath on Democrats. The headlines would have screamed. Reporters would have demanded that Romney distance himself. That Ryan distance himself. That Rick Snyder distance himself, and so on for days. Another diversion from the GOP’s economics theme, blah, blah, blah.

But this was a Democrat.

And so nothing from the Freep. Nothing from MLive. Nothing from the nets. The conservative blogosphere bird-dogged the comment (amplified by GOP counter-tweets) and raised enough of a ruckus that Granholm cried “uncle” the next day: “Not a good idea to tweet a joke when disaster looms. I apologize.”

Fair enough. But apologize for what? After all, thanks to the Secret Service-like protection of the MSM, she had done no harm to her party’s political image.
